Steps to Success

intropicI used to suffer from addictive behaviour linked to my asthma that controlled me from an early age. I knew I needed my inhaler, I knew how to wheeze, when to wheeze and even why to wheeze. I knew when to expect to wheeze, to identify difficult situations and prepare to wheeze -–often by taking my inhaler in plenty of time. The addiction could be used to gain attention, get me out of difficult situation, buy me time or even give me an excuse. Make no mistake, I did have asthma, and bad asthma too. Some days I could not walk up the local town high street due to debilitating asthma. I was allergic to everything from smog to hayfever, from cold weather to endurance activities.

I could leave the house, walk up the road feeling fine – suddenly realise I had forgotten my inhaler and feel a tightening of the chest, a concern, a little wheeze and possible even the onset of an attack. That’s NOT ASTHMA, that’s ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOUR.

The more ventolin/salbutamol inhalers I used, the more I needed. The more I needed, the more I took. I’m sure you get the idea.

I was a professional asthmatic. And I did not realise until 4th November 1998 when I quit. I gave up ‘doing’ asthma. I changed my behaviour, my beliefs and my understanding. I gave myself choices and therefore power and I took RESPONSIBILITY. I have not used my inhalers since and I do NOT DO asthma anymore. I still don’t like smog, no one does, but I have done triathlons, I cycle weekly, enjoy the gym, ski and have so fun from the freedom of choice I have.

Think about how such choices can effect your life positively. Imagine having the choice and skills to communicate at many levels successfully and influence people positively? What would it be like if you never wheezed again? What would you do if you could stop doing drugs now? How would you behave if you could relax when you wanted to? Feel good without help or get through the morning without sugar? Go for dinner without needing booze or fags to enjoy it? If you could get through the day without vodka, stopping at the off-license for a quick half bottle or avoiding the pub when out for a walk with the dog?

Will you let drugs, alcohol, other people or poor behaviours control you in your life? Or will you try something new – a new way of behaving, a new way of being. Be a new you with the help of LEAP PERFORMANCE COACHING…….?

The sad thing is, most adults will try something new less than once. Let me repeat that. Most adults try something new less than once. They will think about it, consider it, muse over it, wish they could do it – but they will NOT actually do anything about it or try to make the change and be the difference. What a shame, what a waste of life ~ your life.
