The Marshmallow Test - Mastering Self Control
I'm currently reading this book. It set off my synchronicity alarm by being mentioned three times within a short period:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Marshmallow-Test-Mastering-Self-Control/dp/0316230871

One of the mentions suggested that a current equivalent was social media. How good are you at restricting the number of times you check Twitter or FB when you should be doing other things?

I'm enjoying the book so far. Very thought provoking.

Ironically, I came here to distract myself from a piece I am supposed to be writing.

Parenting and other vacuums
There are too many vacuums now - media, corporate ethics, etc. Government can and should play a role here by defining frameworks for regulation (eg banking, tax) that are much simpler and stop belly-aching about people avoiding tax or taking mad risks. To help align individual interest to community interest is Government's job - to set the framework within which we operate together. The fall of the traditional Civil Service has left this vacuum, then creaing other vacuums, and society suffers.

Ah...then you just did :)
You'll be swept up in a flying saucer as soon as you step outside your home. See you there! Weather? Where we going we have a completely new kind of 'weather'! You'll love it if you love me, or hate it if you hate me!
Have fun...

Do clients prefer coaches to be strangers?
This is a question that will have a significant influence on how you go about your marketing. Although I'm not aware of any surveys I sense that people would prefer to work with a coach who isn't known to them, and not an existing friend. This enables them to have the distance in the relationship that will allow them to be completely honest.

What do the professional coaches out there think?
169 weeks ago, by Aboodi
I agree fully, James.

I don't mind giving a friend the occasional coaching input, but I would never coach a friend, and I always advise the coaches I train to avoid coaching anyone they are close to, for the reason you mention. Distance allows us to be both completely honest, but also to remain unattached to the client's actions and choices.

In addition, as an 'outsider' to the coachee's world, I am less likely to be blinded by the narratives they live in.

Compassionate Sales
Please please please. If you try and sell me something, whether I want it or not, please connect with me first.... I'm a person, a human, I have hopes and fears....expectations....children.... So can we connect, if only simply, first before you try flogging me stuff!
I'm not 'Needy' but perhaps three seconds to recognise I'm an individual, might be nice!
No I haven't had a crash, no I haven't got PPI....
Is there such thing as compassionate sales?
Shall we try it?

Who else accesses this site ?
Not really a "rant" as such - just a question ... Is it just me, James and PJ who are active on this site ? Is there anyone else out there ? Does anyone get client leads off this site ? Anybody ?

Coaching questions for kids
Why don't parents ask more coaching questions and actually listen to their kids.
I appreciate I'm no model parent and that people in glass houses etc etc...., but my word, when I see parents squealing at their kids in the supermarket and throwing all kinds of threats about, I just wonder what good can come if it.
Tell a kid what to do and its either obey or disobey, ask quality questions and you engage them, their thinking and their creative genius.
Listen, ask questions.

Parenting seemed to move from the authoritarian model to a vacuum. Parents understood that they weren't to smack anymore but didn't understand what to do instead. In many cases that left children rudderless and tempted by other forms of order - gangs etc. It's amazing that we need to pass a test and get a licence for almost everything except children.

The Business Athlete
Just back from a few days delivering a coaching programme with top sports coach, Colin Wilson, who has coached Olympic coaches to coach. He operates under the title the Business Athlete.
Whilst I am more business orientated in my coaching and more provocative in style, Colin is better educated, prepared and knowledgable in the coaching field and it was a pleasure to work with him.
Look out for his new book on how to coach a World Champion table tennis player.

Thoughts can and will change your life
Thoughts create your world.  Thoughts create your world even if you don't think they do.  If you think a thought over and over again, you will get it.  Here is an example: if someone says, “I am depressed”, and they say this over and over again, they will most likely become depressed.  Even if a person just says, “I am sad” over and over again, the person will become sadder and more depressed.  It’s like old saying, “The… Read More »
